Prepare Your Sumptuous Snail Stew This Way
Snail in our soups and stews is similar to other meat, it is one of the easiest and affordable meat alternatives you can have in your meal. It has its own unique flavor, together with numerous health benefits.
Let me take you through the process of preparing this delicious meal. The Ingredients required include snail, alum, pepper, tomatoes, onions, dry fish, groundnut oil, salt and spices to taste.
Prepare Your Ingredients
- Wash and blend your fresh pepper, onions, tomatoes, and every other ingredient.
- Slice your onions
- Wash your dry fish with hot water and debone
Break the shell and remove the snail, if you can’t do this ask them to do it for you in the market. You can either use salt or not. If you would use salt, then massage the body of the snails, to remove the slime, while doing this you will notice your snail getting hard, it’s the dehydrating effect of the salt. Massage for a while and remove the slime bulk as you massage. Throw some alum inside a bowl of water and soak your snail with it. If you don’t have an alum you can wash it with your water whether cold or hot.
Check if all the slime is removed, then wash properly with alum, using a knife to cut it open. Use the alum to wash the center of the snail and all the edges at the back, rinse and set your snail aside. It is ready to be used for cooking
Place a pan on the fire and allow it to dry. Pour your groundnut oil inside and let it bleach. Fry your sliced onions for a few minutes, then add your snail and fry too. Add your blended paste of tomatoes onions and peppers.
Stir very well under high heat at first. Reduce the heat, add your dry fish, season to taste then allow it to settle under the reduced heat. When your stew is ready, the foam on the surface won’t be there and there will be oil floating on top, bring down.
You can serve with anything you wish to have whether rice, yam, plantain or banku.
